California Metals Coalition Institute: CMCi
Leaders of the metalworking industry created the California Metals Coalition Institute (CMCi) to further education, training, and legacy of California's metalworking industry. CMCi is registered as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and operates independently of CMC. CMCi works with local educational programs to prepare the next generation of metalworking leaders. One key partnership is with the MiraCosta College Machinist Technology Training center in Carlsbad, CA.
The Manufacturing Machinist Technology Program is a full time 480-hour training program (3 months). The program runs 5 days a week (Mon-Fri). Students learn how to use precision instruments that fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. Students are instructed in the operation of a variety of prevision metal removal tools, such as small hand tools, drill presses, band saws, lathes, milling machines, and grinders. Shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, machining procedures, tooling and basic understanding of CNC machining are also covered. Students are required to design and create multiple projects using all of the machines, which demonstrates foundational competency. OSHA-10 certification is achieved, and students receive a MiraCosta College Certificate of Accomplishment upon completion of all requirements.
