California Metals Industry: Melting Crime Initiative
Melting Crime Initiative: Bay Area News Channel 2
The California metalworking industry provides a vital community service throughout the state. Working with local police departments, sheriff offices, and cities, local metal businesses offer a free "end of life service" for weapons.
In partnership with local law enforcement, the Melting Crime Initiative is designed to permanently remove guns and weapons from the streets of California in an effort to reduce violence in our communities. Guns and weapons--including rifles, handguns, shotguns, knives, and automatic rifles--that have been confiscated by law enforcement are brought to selected metal businesses at no cost.
The weapons are melted and recycled into new products, such as pipes, pipe fittings, construction rebar, and exercise weights. Since its inception, more than 1,000,000 weapons have been permanently removed from the community, making our neighborhoods more safe.
CMC, and several CMC members, are proud participants in this program as we do our part to reduce (or eliminate) crime in the communities of California. (Click Here for Article).
CMC supports a safe and accountable end-of-life process for firearms. Recently, some companies have not been properly handling the weapons. (Click Here for Article)
